This recently discovered photo gives us an idea of the size of the ancient quarried tufo caverns when compared to the size of the excavation machine, its operator and the cast concrete archway of the expressway tunnel.

In a previously posted article entitled, Two new cavities found buried in the archives of the CSM, we reported that survey drawings had been found in the extensive archives of engineer, Clemente Esposito.
The quarried out caverns and a narrow connecting tunnel were discovered during the construction of the Naples Crosstown Expressway in the 1970's with the two ancient caverns being in line with a deep underground expressway tunnel, known as the Arenella North tunnel being excavated for the project.
We have now digitized the survey drawings and indicated the relative positions and the shapes of the cavities which are available in our web site Cavity Database which you will find in the via Pietro Castellino planimetric data of the Arenella quarter.
The Database codes assigned are:
C0157 - Huge quarried cavern partially filled in
C0752 - This cavity was totally filled in
C0753 - Access tunnel crossing the Arenella North expressway tunnel
As soon as we have completed the overall planimetric sectional work we will let you know.
