The swissinfo.ch website reports on the Gotthard Base Tunnel, 57 km (35 miles) long, scheduled to open on June2 of this year. It will be the longest tunnel in the world with trains reaching 250 km/180 mi/h. It will be first flat low-level route through the Alps and will consist of two single-track tunnels connecting Erstfeld (Swiss canton of Uri) with Bodio (Swiss canton of Ticino). The tunnel has been under construction since 1999  and is part of the AlpTransit project, also known as the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA), The complete report on this engineering marvel is on the swissinfo website at this link:
