The Grotto of Tiberius and the National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga

Translated by Jeff Matthews

Site type: Museum and archaeological area.

Description: The area is Sperlonga, which, according to tradition, owes its name to the presence of many natural cavities, speluncae in Latin.  The entire area presents cliffs and rocky limestone spurs that because of karst processes, have studded the area with numerous grottoes. It is near one of these that the emperor Tiberius chose to build his home. The grotto of Tiberius, itself, was no doubt reshaped in some parts, but evidence of the natural form of the cave remains. The grotto is a hemisphere in the cliff that closes to the south the long Sperlonga beach and is adjacent to the imperial residence itself.
