The Antro della Sibilla discovered by Maiuri is based on a description in Virgil's Aeneid. The Aeneid was written centuries after the Sibyls. By Virgil's day (and St Justin) the Sibyls had already disappeared, so his description of the cave is fictional. I've read there are archaeologists who believe “Maiuri's cave” was a Roman military tunnel. It never made sense to me. When it comes down to impression, comparing the recognized and accepted Antro della Sibilla to the cavern my local friends showed me is like comparing the Coliseum in Rome to the Amphitheater of Pompeii. Both are historically spectacular but one takes your breath away.

Hi fas51! How are you?
I tell again the cave you visited was the Crypta Romana. This cave is at the base of the hill of Cuma. I told you about a short film by Terry Gilliam, “The Wholly Family”, shot in its ancient cisterns. This is a frame from that film, I think you will recognize the ray of “light which entered from a hole in the ceiling shown on a circular rock seat in the center of the cave”...
